木次線の旅に出る日がやってきました。この路線は日本でも有数の閑散路線です。
しかし途中に3段スイッチバックがあることから、鉄道ファンにはとても有名な路線です。
特急列車で出発点である宍道駅に降り立ちます。
It is the day of departure to get on a train of Kisuki line. This line is the one of the most lightest traffic in Japan.
But it is well-known among Japanese railroad fans that there are two switch-back operation sections.
I got off the limited express train at Shinji station that is the termianl of Kisuki line.

ホームの端で線路が分岐しています。左に分かれていく線路が木次線です。
まるで引き込み線のようですが、これでもかつては陰陽連絡の重要ルートで、急行列車が走っていました。いまではそんな面影はすっかり消えています。
The track diverges from the main line at the end of the platform. The track dividing into the left is Kisuki line.
It looks like a sidetrack. But this line was the main transportation route between Sanyou area and Sannin area in the old days, and express trains ran. There is no remnant of the glory there.

線路がはがされたホームの脇に0キロポストがありました。
There is a zero distance post (starting point) by the platform, but there is no track there.

山陰本線を走る列車から見た黄昏時の宍道湖。
宍道駅は宍道湖のすぐ側に位置しています。
We can see a beautiful scenery of lake Shinji from a train window of Sannin line in the twilight.
Shinji station stands by lake Shinji.

木次線の列車は普段はディーゼルカー1両だけですが、私を待っていた列車はなんと4両編成。乗務員も3名。まるでかつての急行列車のように立派です。
The local train that is waiting for me consists of four cars. I’m very surprised at because usually the local train consists of only one diesel car. Three trainmen are working. The train looks glorious like an old express.

編成にはキハ120系のトップナンバーの車両も組み込まれています。
The one of the four cars is car number 1 of the series kiha 120. It is the first product of this series.

列車は定刻に出発しました。
左にカーブを切ると、いきなり田園風景のど真ん中です。列車は山間をゆっくりと走っていきます。
The local train leaves on time.
The countryside spreads out before us when the train turns to the left. The train runs slowly in the mountains.

しばらく走ると木次駅に到着です。ここで列車を乗り換えます。
これから出雲の山奥に分け入っていくのです。
さて、乗り換えるこの列車は・・・？
The train ran for some time and arrived at Kisuki station. I changed trains at this station.
