いよいよ出雲坂根駅が見えてきました。
木次線のハイライトです。
We can see the Izumo-Sakane station ahead.
It is the highlight of Kisuki line.

ここで列車はスイッチバックのために1回目の方向転換をします。
ここ出雲坂根駅の標高は564m、次の三井野原駅の標高は726m。一駅の間になんと約160mもの標高差を登ります。列車は途中で2回スイッチバックで方向転換をし、9個のトンネルを抜けてゆっくりと登っていくのです。
The direction of the train is changed at this station. It is the first switch-back operation section.
The altitude of this station is 564meters, and it of Miinohara station the next stop is 726meters. The differential of the altitude between the two stations is about 160meters. The train changes its direction twice and goes up a steep hill slowly through nine tunnels.

大変なのは列車だけではありません。車の道路もこの区間は難所です。道路は巨大なループ橋とアーチ橋で峠を越えていきます。こちらもまるで「おろち」そのものです。
出雲坂根駅のホームから峠の方角を見ると、奥に道路のアーチ橋が見えます。このアーチ橋は目印としてよく覚えておいてください。これから列車はあのアーチ橋を見下ろすほどの位置まで登っていきます。この時点ではにわかに信じられない高さにアーチ橋があります。
Not only trains but also cars go up a steep rise in the roadway, too. There is a big loop bridge and a arch bridge in the roadway. The big loop bridge looks like the “Orochi.”
The loop bridge stands behind the station. We can see the bridge at the platform. Please remember the bridge as a landmark. The train is just going to go up above the bridge. Unbelievablly, you will be able to see the bridge below later.

出雲坂根駅では大きな桜の木が満開の花を付けていました。古い腕木式信号機もあります。
この桜もよい目印になるので覚えておいてください。
The cherry blossom is in full bloom now in front of Izumo-Sakane station. There is an old signal.
Please remember the tree of cherry blossom as a landmark, too.

列車は出雲坂根駅で少し休憩を取ります。ホームには延命水というおいしい水が湧き出ているので、人間もほっと一息入れましょう。
The train stops at this station for a few minutes. Let’s drink the cool water of “Enmei-sui” that springs at the platform, and have a break.

いよいよスイッチバックに挑みます。
今までとは逆向きに発車して、少し進んだ山の中で一旦停止します。その後、再び進行方向を変えて峠を登っていきます。
眼下にはいままで走ってきた2本の線路が木々の間に見え隠れします。
That is it.
The train goes backward and stops in the mountain removed from the station. Then it moves ahead slowly.
The tracks on which the train ran are seen off and on below among the trees.

もう出雲坂根駅があんなに下になりました。
目印の桜の木がはっきりと見えます。
Izumo-Sakane station is already seen below.
We can find the tree of the cherry blossom the landmark of it.

ゆっくりと登っていく奥出雲おろち号。
出雲坂根駅が見えますが、わかりますでしょうか？
“Oku-Izumo Orochi” goes up a steep hill slowly.
Izumo-Sakane station is in this picture. Can you find it?

標高600mを越えました。まだまだ登ります。
The altitude is over 600meters. The train still goes up.

いつしかテントウムシも一緒に旅行しています。
A ladybug travels with us without notice.

いくつかのトンネルを抜けるとループ橋が見えます。
道路はあのようにぐるぐると回りながら登っているのです。
The train goes through some tunnels, and the big loop bridge of the roadway is appeared.
It looks like a coilling “Orochi.”

標高は718mに達しました。道路が下に見えます。
The altitude is 718meters now. The roadway is seen below.

突然、林の木々がなくなると、あのアーチ橋が全貌をあらわにします。
これが出雲坂根駅から見えたあの橋です。列車から橋を見下ろす高さに来ました。
The arch bridge is shown suddenly when trees of the mountain disappeared.
This is the bridge which we saw at the Izumo-Sakane station. Finally, we can see the bridge of the landmark below our eyes.

やがて三井野原駅に到着します。
ここまで来ると風景は一変し、あたりは山ではなく高原の雰囲気が漂っています。
三井野原駅を出ると、終点、備後落合はもうすぐです。
We will be arrived at the Miinohara station soon.
The views of the train window were changed. The scenery of around the station is not mountains but highland.
After leaving at the station, we will be arrived at the Bingo-Ochiai station the last stop in a few minutes.

木次線のこの区間が完成したのは昭和12年(1937)です。一方で道路のループ橋ができたのが平成4年(1992)です。
実際に走ってみると、建設技術が乏しかった昔に、よくこんなところに鉄道を通したものだと感心してしまいます。これはもう立派な遺産なのではないかと思います。
This section of Kisuki line was opened in 1937. But the big loop bridge was opened in 1992.
I was very impressed that the railroad was built in the heart of the mountains in the old days. The construction might be very difficult in those days, but it was accomplished. It appears to be brilliant heritage.

木次線の奥出雲おろち号は、様々なサービスがあり、風景も楽しめる素晴らしい列車です。
私は日本全国のJR路線に乗り、様々な観光列車に乗車してきましたが、現時点ではこの列車がNo.1だと感じています。
それは車体の新しさやデザインの美しさ、沿線の風景の素晴らしさだけが、観光ではないということです。
奥出雲おろち号では乗務員さんもガイドさんも、乗客に楽しんでもらえるようにみなさんとても一生懸命です。
また車内で販売されているお土産も、企業とタイアップした記念品やファンの売り上げを狙う限定品等ではなく、すべてこの列車が止まる地元の駅近くで、地元の人が作った素朴なものです。まさに地産地消。本当のサービスがこの列車にはあるのです。
木次線は地元に愛されているのだと思います。急行列車が走らなくなった今でも輝いていました。
“Oku-Izumo Orochi” is the wonderful train. I am very satisfied with the kindness of conductors and views from its window.
I took a lot of trips to almost whole line of Japan railway company groups and took many trains. I think that “Oku-Izumo Orochi” is the finest sightseeing train at the present time.
The most important thing of shightseeing is not the lastest model of the train or beautiful design.
The trainmen and guides try to amuse us all. They are  hard workers.
The souvenirs which are sold in this train are not tie-up items with business and limited edition sales for only railroad fans, but homespun handmade items of the local around the stations. That is regionally produced and consumed. When it comes to entertaining passengers, they are really it. The area of Izumo boasts the fine train.
People of Izumo loves Kisuki line. The train is coverd in glory, though express trains don’t run any more.

トンネルに入ると、トロッコ車両は夏でもかなり涼しくなります。
特に備後落合行きではトロッコ車両が先頭車なので寒いほどです。
木次行きでは前方の機関車からの排気が流れてきますので、それほど寒くはありません。
トンネルの反響が響いて、おろちの鳴き声のように聞こえます。
It is cool in the windowless coach in a tunnel, even in summer.
Especially, it is cold on the train bound for Bingo-Ochiai because the windowless coach is the front of the train. But it is not very cold on the train for Kisuki. The hot exhaust gas of the locomotive blew toward us.
The engine noise of the train echos through the tunnel. It sounds like a dragon roar.

天井にはおろちのイルミネーションがあり、様々な色に変化しながら輝きます。
There is the illumination of the dragon on the ceiling, and it shines in various colors.

おろち号の素晴らしい点は車内販売が充実していることでしょう。
地元の名産物のワゴンが次々と乗車してきて、いろいろなものを見ることができます。食べ物だけでも、とても1回では全部食べられません。
It is very fun that a lot of special products of this region are sold in the train “Oku-Izumo Orochi.”
Salespersons get into the train at the almost every station and shuttle the sales cart loaded with the special products and launch boxes. There are too many items to buy at once trip.

車内販売以外にも、駅にも名物があります。
これは出雲坂根駅の焼き鳥です。
Special products are sold at the stations, too.
This is the Yakitori (grilled chicken) sold at the Izumo-Sakane station.

こちらは亀嵩駅の手打ちそば。
列車で食べるには事前に予約しておく必要があります。ホームまで弁当として持ってきてくれるのです。
This is the Japanese noodle of buckwheat sold at the Kamedake station.
It is delivered to the train if you reserve it in advance.

木次のヨーグルト。
目で見るだけでなく、口でも楽しめるのが、おろち号の良いところです。
This is the yogurt of Kisuki.
The fun of the train is not only vistas but also tastes.

トンネルの向こうには美しい田園風景が広がっていました。
The splendid vista of the Japanese country unfoled before my eyes beyond the tunnel.

懐かしい農村風景。
Good old villages of country.

清涼な川のせせらぎ。
The song of a stream. The water of it is clear and cool.

山桜の彩り。
様々なハイライトシーンが車窓を次々と流れていきます。
トロッコ車両から眺める風景は本当に開放的で素晴らしいです。
Beautiful flowers of a cherry blossom in the mountains.
The various view points burst on one after another.
It is very fine that we can see from the train window.

木次駅から先の各駅には神話の愛称がついています。
下久野駅は動動（あよあよ）です。変わった名前なので、みなさん一発で覚えてしまいます。
鬼に食われそうになった男が「動動」と叫んだことから、この土地の名前が阿用郷（あよのさと）になったことに由来するそうです。
Every station beyond the Kisuki has a alias in Kisuki line.
The alias of Shimokuno station is AYOAYO. Everyone remembers it immediately, because it sounds strange and simple.
A long time ago, when a monster hold a man in its mouth to eat him, he cried out “AYOAYO.” It is the reason that the this area named Ayonosato.

こちらは伝説のヒロイン奇稲田姫の名前がついた出雲横田駅。ちょっとした集落があります。
This is Izumo-Yokota station. The alias is princess Kushiinada. It is the small town.

「奥出雲おろち号」には車掌さんの他に地元のガイドの方も添乗しています。
こうした沿線の観光情報は車掌さんとガイドさんが、実に事細かに、おもしろおかしく説明してくれます。何気なく過ぎていく小学校の校庭の大きな木についても、きちんと説明があるほどです。
説明に合わせて右を見たり、左を見たりしているだけでも、かなり忙しく、気を抜く余裕はありません。
The local guide conducts the tour with train conductors on the “Oku-Izumo Orochi.”
They explain various informations of sightseeing and folklore in detail. Their talks amused us all. There was a big tree in the schoolyard of a local elementary school. Nobody didn’t care it, but they explained about the tree. We were surprised.
I was so busy in listening their explanations and looking at the view points on my right or left hand side. I was concentrating on their explanations.

列車はだんだん山深くに分け入っていきます。
The train goes into the deep in the mountains.

さて、前方には再び長いトンネルが見えてきましたよ。
We can see a long tunnel ahead.

神話の世界へようこそ。
今日は奥出雲おろち号にまつわる神話のお話です。木次駅に設置されている看板に書かれている神話を、おろち号の列車を背景に紹介します。
Today, I will tell you the legend of “Orochi” in Izumo area. There are some story boards of the legend in front of the train “Oku-Izumo Orochi” at the Kisuki station.

奥出雲おろち号の「おろち」とは、伝説の大蛇「八岐大蛇（やまたのおろち）」のことです。
木次の町を流れる斐伊川流域にはたくさんの大蛇伝説が残っています。
The word “Orochi” means the huge snake (oriental dragon) of the legend. It was called “Yamata no Orochi.”
The stroy of the dragon legend is handed down from generation to generation in the Hii basin flowing through the town of Kisuki.

素戔嗚尊（すさのおのみこと）が神の国である高天原から出て出雲の国までやってくると、老夫婦と一人の娘が泣いていました。
老夫婦の名は、脚摩乳（あしなづち）と手摩乳（てなづち）、娘の名は奇稲田姫（くしなだひめ）と言います。
泣いている理由は八岐大蛇です。毎年ひとりずつ娘を大蛇に生け贄に捧げて、今年はこの姫の番になりました。しかし、何も打つ手がないのです。
A long long time ago, “Susanounomikoto” the son of god desended from the heaven “Takamagahara” and came to Izumo. An old couple and a daughter were crying.
The old man’s name is “Ashinazuchi” and her wife’s is “Tenazuchi.” The name of the their daughter is “Kushiinada.”
They said that the evil dragon “Yamata no Orochi” had killed their eight daughters evry year. “Kushiinada” will be killed in this year. The old couple cried out for help, “We don’t know what to do. We can’t do any more.”

素戔嗚尊は大蛇を退治することを決意します。
そこで脚摩乳と手摩乳に、八つの壺に酒を入れて用意するように言いました。
八岐大蛇はは八つの頭としっぽがあり、その胴体は八つの山と谷に広がっていて、背中には松や柏が生えていました。大蛇は酒の壺を見つけると、それぞれの壺に頭を突っ込んで呑み始めます。そして、やがて酔いが回って寝てしまうのです。
その隙を見計らって、素戔嗚尊は剣で大蛇をずたずたに切り刻みました。こうして大蛇を退治したのです。
大蛇のしっぽを切る時に、剣の刃が少し欠けてしまいました。不思議に思った素戔嗚尊がしっぽの中を調べると、そこに1本の剣が見つかりました。その剣は「天の叢雲剣（あまのむらくものつるぎ）」です。
この剣は現在は「草薙の剣（くさなぎのつるぎ）」となり、皇位継承の証である三種の神器のひとつになっています。
Susanounomikoto determined to defeat the evil dragon.
He requested the old couple, “Bring eight casks of sake to the dragon.”
“Yamata no Orochi” has eight heads and tails, and is lying down on the eight mountains and eight valleis. There are many pine and oak trees on its back.
The dragon drank off eight casks of sake and drank itself insensible.
Susanounomikoto choped down the dragon with his sword while it was stupefied with drink. He rided the dragon.
The edge of his sword chipped when he attacked the tail of the dragon. There was a something hard inside of it. It was the sword of “Amenomurakumo.”
The sword of “Amenomurakumo” named the sword of “Kusanagi” by Susanounomikoto in another legend of him. It is the one of the three Sacred Treasures symbolizing the Japanese Imperial throne.

大蛇を退治した素戔嗚尊は奇稲田姫と婚約します。
そして結婚によい場所を探して、須賀（すが）という場所に着きました。ここで奇稲田姫が「ああ、私の心はすがすがしい」と言ったので、ここに宮を建てました。
このとき素戔嗚尊は姫に対する気持ちを恋歌に詠みました。その音が五、七、五、七、七だったので、これが日本の和歌の始まりになったとされています。
Susanounomikoto engaged to the princess Kushiinada.
They searched for a land to live and finally found it in Suga area. They built the house there because Kushiinada said that what a refreshing place it was! Refreshing means “sugasugashii” in Japanese. “SUGA” area and “SUGA SUGA shii” are play on words in Japanese.
Susanounomikoto composed a poem of love for her. The poem was the first Japanese poem “Waka” because it consisted of five, seven, five, seven and seven words.

この神話に出てくる「天の叢雲剣（＝草薙の剣）」は、現在は、名古屋市の熱田神宮にご神体として祀られています。
名古屋は私の故郷なのでなんだか「ご縁」を感じます。私はかつて学生時代に島根出身の彼女がいました。私はその姫とは結ばれませんでしたが、おろち号に乗ってふと不思議な縁に思いを馳せました。彼女はいまも元気にしているでしょうか。
日本には、他にも数多くの神話や伝承が残されています。
鉄道に乗って、そんな各地の神話を訪ねてみるのも、また一興だと思います。
The sword of “Kusanagi” in this legend is enshrined in Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya city now.
Since I was born in Nagoya, I am familiar with this sword. When I was at the university, I had a girlfriend who was born in Shimane prefecture. We didn’t get married, but I suddenly remembered her on the train. I hope she is well now.
There are a lot of legends and folklore in Japan.

さて木次駅を出た「おろち」号はいきなりトンネルに入ります。
先頭のトロッコ車両からは前方のパノラマが存分に楽しめます。トンネルを抜けるとそこには何が見えるでしょうか。
The train “Oku-Izumo Orochi” left the station, and went into a tunnel soon.
We can see the very fine views in front of the windowless coach. I am looking forward to seeing a vista beyound the tunnel.
